Is my CO2 regulator knackered?
David Jenkins - 26/8/12 at 10:19 AM

Tried to do some welding this morning, but couldn't get much gas flow out of the torch. Great, I thought, I'm out of gas...

Then I heard a slight hiss from the regulator, and it was coming out of the side:

Does this mean that the thing's knackered? Diaphragm gone, or similar? Or am I just out of gas?

I'm guessing, as I'm no expert on regulators,

but is there a hole in the nut you have arrowed?

If so, this could be a pressure relief in case of a perforated diaphragm.

Mine looks like this

Yes, there is a hole - I was wondering if the diaphragm had gone...

I might get an adaptor for my argon regulator, as that's a proper one (as opposed to "cheap and nasty" ).

Or I might get one like you've shown in your picture - every man and his dog are selling similar ones on ebay!

Well, my new regulator has arrived!

I ended up buying one very similar to the one in 907's picture above, although I haven't attached a flow meter (i have the type you hold over the end of the MIG torch).

And I still have some gas (not a lot though) so the old reg was knackered.
