How to cut a thread with a die

I'm looking for M18 x 1.5 threaded rod, and as always it's 'challenging' to find. The only supplier I found on this side of the pond is out of stock.

So, time to consider cutting a thread. I did it once in school and remember the technique, but I'm no engineer and was just copying rather than learning. If I'm looking at an M18 thread, do I start with 18mm steel?

Yes, 18mm OD steel rod for M18 thread.

How long do you need the threaded pieces?

The inserts are 60mm long and I'm guessing the more the thread the better, so maybe 70-80mm times four? I had thought of finding suitable set screws and cutting the head off, but even that seems harder than expected.

Try Non Standard Socket Screw Company in Brum, they probably have them off the shelf

I got a couple 3/4 UNF bolts off eBay the other day, these are pretty much the equivalent if you are making up something, I wanted them to make a puller

They're going to be the suspension adjusters for the rear suspension. I'm guessing your plan of using them for a puller suggests that they would be able to sustain a decent amount of pulling forces?

My rear suspension sits on 1/2" unf rose joints, 3/4" is more your commercial size, landrovers etc.

McGills sells threaded bungs to suit.

my machinist could make those up for you very reasonably if you can't find off the shelf. I'm going to see him tomorrow I could get a price if you want

That would be great if you could? Could you possibly get a price for the inserts as well, £10 a pair is about as cheap as I can get them at the moment?

I'm after;

6 x M18 x 1.5 (fine thread) x 60mm inserts. The Ebay ones are made out of 30mm metal.
4 x M18 x 1.5 (fine thread) x 80mm threaded rod.

I believe the basis for the M18 insert is the Transit ball joint, so yes definitely commercial size. I don't really need to use M18 inserts for the rear, but having found the inserts it makes sense to stick with what's available.
