I have decided that it is easiest to engrave my chassis number direct onto a tube rather than stamp and weld a plate on because of adjacent body work. I have a Dremel and my plan is to purchase an appropriate bit and get to work. Two issues however 1) is the Dremel up to the job or is it too clumsy to use in this mode? 2) Plan is to stencil ( from where? ) number on to chassis tube with a felt pen and use that as a guide for engraving. Will this work or are there better techniques? Answers on a postcard as they say. TIA.
Hasn't one chassis number to be on a separate plate?
i bought a dremel engraver for about £18 brand new.
Quite impressed with it for a cheap tool, came with a stencil and passed IVA no probs.
The engraving bits for the normal dremel seem quite cheap, why not buy one and play around on some scrap?
I printed mine from the PC, onto ordinary printing paper, taped it to the chassis and engraved through the paper

I found it very difficult to engrave a bit of tube so used a stencil and a centre punch

I just stamped mine onto the chassis... at the beginning of the SVA test!
(Because I'd forgotten to put it on before the test!)
Cheers,
James
Very common to deform the chassis when trying to stamp directly to the chassis.
I dont know what you get issues the number, but is there any scope to have it engraved onto the tube before its welded into the chassis?
