Had a long term loan of a chop saw for cutting metal. Chap asked for it back last week and now I need one myself as I use it more often than a few cuts with an angle grinder.

Had a look and wow I wasn't expecting the price tags!!

The evolution saws from screwfix seem cheaper but don't think they will last for only metal cutting? Any thoughts?

Just looking at the price of tools. Wow they have gone up in price, even the cheaper brands.

The rage3 evolution chop saw that claims to cut everything with one blade is a good saw. However I doubt the blade will cut much mild steel without dulling. The blades are quite cheap though.

I bought a cheap px branded 180 chop of saw cost me little under £80 it works a treat ..................the only thing I would say if you buy a cheap saw is dont use the cheap non branded cutting disk throw it away and buy a quality blade like makita or bosch ,

the cheap blades can shatter and its not fun

Any experience of the evolution saws. I see they do a cut off style rage4 but why for the same price would u have that over a slidding compound saw.

I have a barely used Evolution Rage chop saw - it's cut 5 bits of wood.

It cost £120 - yours for £60 and I still have the box. I'm in Harrogate if you're interested.

no real experiance only with the saw I have I live in Thailand but I am sure you can get somthing cheap In the UK

That would have been interesting but harrowgate is miles away. May look into the Cromwell a bit more.

I do frequently get to Bracknell, reading, etc. if that helps.

I've been using a Rage compound mitre chop saw for well over a year now and have cut loads of 1" box, 2" box and 30mm tube. The blade has just started to blunt but it 's probably cut enough steel to make two or three locosts. Definateley worth considering but make sure its the orange one not the green and let the blade do the cutting (ie don't force it through the steel)

What's the difference between orange and green?

We have the machine mart 14" saw and an. Evolotion cmpnd mitre oneM. Both are fine tend to use the machine mart jobbie for lots of straight cuts on thick walled box sectionN the evolution saw tends to snatch a bit and throws more. Fragmenmts about as trhge guard doesnLkt enclose blade so much but both sorts work fine so long as you stay focused!

Had a 10" rage saw for a couple of years and still pleased with it for the money. It's cut plenty of wood and a good deal of 1" box, angle and tube with no difficulty and the blade is still good. It's not the last word in accuracy, the zero degree preset is a fraction off, but not enough to be a real issue. As above always let the blade do the work and don't force it. Cutting steel with it is noisy and spews out a lot of very hot swarf.

If you can only afford to buy (and have space to store) one saw then the rage is a good compromise IMHO.
