Softening welding gloves
Slimy38 - 26/7/14 at 10:02 AM

I've just bit the bullet and bought a fresh set of welding gloves, but I've forgotten how stiff they are when they're new. Any tips on how to make them bendy, other than just using them?

Leather conditioner should do the trick although you'ld want to make sure it didn't turn the leather flammable- many are oil based....

Tig gloves are more user friendly. Not so thick but more pliable.

Another vote for Tig welding gloves

Not sure warm urine is an aroma I could live with while welding...

TIG gloves sound good though, does the thinner leather mean less protection?

Tig gloves every time for me as well, yes they are slightly thinner and therefore offer slightly less protection but how much protection do you want when compared to good gun control which should lessen splatter etc anyway?

It's usually the index finger and the back of my right hand, as that's how I aim the torch. But yes, I can imagine having a bit more control with my left hand should mean it's a lot less violent on the metal.

I only paid a few quid for the mig gloves so I'm happy to give a new pair a go, just need to make sure I get a decent pair. Thanks everyone for the feedback.

Tig gloves aren't expensive I always keep a couple of pairs lying around.

I use a TIG glove on the torch hand and a heavier glove on the other hand.
