I just bought myself a small lathe from http://www.amadeal.co.uk and got a box of cutting tools


Now I know the one on the right is a parting tool, and the bottom two are boring bars, but what are the others?

What you've got is a nice selection of tools for an amateur's lathe!

What you *need* is a good book for amateur lathe users, e.g. "The Amateur's Lathe" by L.H.Sparey - this is the classic text, and still in print. In the meantime, this may help: Workshop Techniques

From left to right

1. Simple OD turning tool for cutting from right to left, it is set up with a slight lead angle, should be good for roughing and can be used for finishing
2. You can OD turn right to left with the front or it, you can face with the left side of it and also put a 45 degree chamfer on an edge
3. Threading tool, it will require more research on how to thread in a lathe, can also to 30 degree chamfers
4. Not quite sure what it's intended purpose is, should work well for heavy facing
5. OD turning tool for cutting from right to left better for finishing cuts, with the left side of the cutting edge angled back like that, it allows you to retract the tool when you have turned to your length and it will leave a nice 90 degree shoulder
6. Pretty much same as 1
7. Pretty much same as 1
8. Same as 1 but used for cutting from left to right
9. Grooving/parting tool, tricky to use and requires good rigidity/tool geometry/rpm (slow speed). Should work good if kept sharp and you part right next to the chuck to stop the workpiece from flexing.
