I've made a thing on my new lathe

The original builder of my car used a 1.5mm aluminium disc to mount the steering wheel to the boss; the last time I went for a drive I felt very uncomfortable with it as it has become quite distorted. I've now converted a square of 3mm steel into a suitable disc (cutting disc, sanding disc, turn on the lathe) and I've now got a straight wheel

1.5mm !!!!!!!! You're lucky to still be here to use your lathe.

That's the curse of the 'original builder'. In my opinion the 'original builder is the black hearted brother of that swine Murphy and his pesky law.

Who ever built my old Indy Bird cut a few corners, but none by quite that much!! I'm amazed you never bent the thing more than it seems to have.

Would it not be a lot safer to have a steering wheel which mounts directly to the 3 bolt boss rather than that Mountrey?

Hang the old bit on a nail in the garage to serve as a reminder of how NOT to do things.
And replace those button heads with flanged ones. They look much nicer.
Then get back on the lathe and make a suitable bung for the hole in the middle.
Nice work, by the way.
I've been a CNC machinist for many years but I love getting
"hands-on" whenever possible!

Hey I have exactly this hanging on my wall. I once built a Florida Swamp Boat powered a 8hp engine and small microlight propeller. At full throttle the engine mounts bent and the prop touched the frame of the boat. Flying splinters everywhere and some are still on the roof of my house to this day. Luckily no one was hurt and the broken prop reminds me how NOT to do stuff.

1.5 mm holy cra* batman totally over the top , this is how the big boys would do it

ford and gm , steel 4mm pressing with webs

Ferrari would have been cast aluminium with a 10mm wall thickness

Mercedes would have been forged unobtainium ! . cant buy spares , we only make 2 to fit the car , after that its a whole new front end sorry .

McLaren would have been carbon fibre machined , stress analysed , tested , re designed to give more driver feel , various thickness and well webbed with lots of holes .

Koenigsegg compressed moon dust infused with fairy plasma .
