Help - which mitre saw?
MikeR - 27/9/15 at 10:50 PM

Folks,

Looking to buy a mitre saw. Its a bit of a 'want' purchase rather than a desperate need which means my requirements are a bit wooly. I'm after a compound sliding mitre as I think that will give me the most flexibility in years to come. Being a cheap ass northerner I don't want to spend anything - yet want something reliable and accurate. I'm sort of down to the following two saws which aren't really comparable.

So whats the collective wisdom of the forum?

http://www.axminster.co.uk/makita-ls1018l-260mm-compound-mitre-saw- with-laser

or

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Evolution-Rage3-DB-Multipurpose-Double-Bevel/dp/B006BRVQ9K/ref=sr_1_34?ie=UTF8&qid=1443394116&sr=8-34& keywords=mitre+saw

Being 150 quid cheaper I like the idea of the rage, but i'm worried about accuracy, life, quality for if I ever do 'nice' stuff and a little about noise (heard a few comments about how loud they are - it would mean I couldn't do anything in the evening as the little uns bed room is facing the garage).

I have one of these

210mm saw

It has been really good, nice repeatable cuts and has chomped through nails stuck in wood with ease.

In hindsight probally should have gone for its bigger brother

255mm saw

If your mitre's do not fit, fill the gap with glue and sh1t.

I bought a small rage for cutting metal.
Not very robust or accurate, but at about £50. it is fine for my needs.
Work has a £90 version which is much better.

Try to find reviews on amazon , or find them in a local shop and have a good look at them.

+1 exactly!! I also have a diamond blade for mine. Brilliant! Will easily cut 4 or 5 ceramic tiles at the same time! Or one porcelain tile slowly.

Try this Evolution RAGE3-S 210mm Multipurpose Sliding Mitre Saw B Grade 230v

£55 delivered. I bought B Grade and no marks found, very good. HTH.

Also have 255mm around £100 - £120 sometimes.

If it's a toss-up between those two models I'd go for the Makita as I've never used anything by Rage.

Can recommend one of these:

http://www.charnwood.net/shop/product/305mm-double-bevel-mitre-saw-1?cid=169

It's the best saw I have had for accuracy and the quality of cut is superb. The bars come forward, rather than stick out at the back, which means it requires a lot less space behind. It's remarkably good value but the dust collection is poor, but that is something you have to pay considerably more for to get right.

And they are just up the road from you.

Edited to add - I also got a table saw, which is OK for what I wanted originally but all of the constituent parts could be better and the after sales service wasn't great. For the bigger stuff I would definitely recommend axminster power tools - and if you have a lottery win go for Festool every time. The mitre saw however is very good.
