Simple mod to a small bulldog clip to aid soldering wire splices on car or off.

Very neat idea...

I too have struggled to hold everything; two wires, soldering iron, solder and keep the heat-shrink sleeve out of the way!

All too often the result has been a crap join or burnt fingers - I'll be keeping an eye out for a Bulldog type clip that I can butcher

i use 2 small croc clips soldered together at 90 degrees,it,s amazing what you can invent

Hmm, that would also be a nicely effective heat sink so the heat doesn't melt too much insulation...

Time to go bulldog clip shopping I think!

I have always twisted the wires together first, and that holds them together, negates needing a clip

but it is a good idea

Pretty sure I've seen it somewhere a soldered join is better with the wires not twisted together though?

Done it this way myself too, but a better job is to tin each wire first which would make twisting them together awkward.

It's similar to what I use when trying to solder wires together, but mine also cooks and washes up, which is all good, but it can also answer back

I have never had an issue twisting wires so not realised there is a need. Just put the heat shink under the join, not above it!

Thicker wires can be a little trouble but then still not an issue.

The best advice i can give is to use a gas iron witha large tip. These are so much hotter and make your life easy. Also makes it easy to get into position as your not battling with the power cable.

Or a 'bell hanger joint' as we called it during my apprenticeship. But we never soldered them.

wooden clothes pegs are a great solution, they don't get hot, and they are insulating of both heat and electricity, two glued side-by-side to a bit of scrap wood is a really simple tool for doing away with the need to be Zaphod Beeblebrox
