Can anyone recommend a good quality brand of oil extractor, I bought a Silverline one and it just manage one oil change before losing 90% of it's
suction and now it's bound for landfill
I would prefer to use a sump plug but it is heavily rounded and so far it has resisted all attempts to remove it and replace it with a nice shiny new
one, I need to an oil change pretty soon
Alternatively can anyone suggest a quick fit style of garage that can do an oil and filter change using a oil extraction unit

Get some Irwin grip sockets to remove rounded bolts.

I made one,.. I don't have a picture to hand, but in essence it required,...
1. ex-garden sprayer bottle
2. narrow bore rigid nylon air-line
3. washing machine outlet hose-corrugated
4. adaptor from washing machine hose to vacuum cleaner hose
So,...
narrow bore hose from the sump to the sprayer bottle, washing machine hose to from sprayer bottle to vacuum cleaner, seal both pipes in the top of the
sprayer bottle. Switch on vacuum cleaner and the oil is sucked out. It takes two or 3 goes to empty the sump then it makes a satisfying sucking noise
when there is no oil left.
Ensure that you use the old garage vacuum not the nice new one that the Mrs keeps for the cream lounge carpet

I've got a Pela 6000 and have to say it's works fine for me on a number of VAG TDI cars. However SWMBO now has a 57 plate Touran 1.9TDI and there seems to be a "baffle" plate in the sump. This "baffle" plate allows the dip stick to pass, but won't allow the Pela 6000 narrow extractor tube to pass, thus preventing me from extracting the oil in such a way. I believe some cars/engines are like this so it may be worth checking yours first. That aside, top side oil changes are cleaner and easier than scrabbling around underneath the car.

Is this words of experience on the choice of vacuum cleaner?
I can only imagine the outfall when the nice carper is trashed with motor oil

I know it works I have already done it with the Silverline pump once before it died, one thing I did need to do was to put a smaller diameter tube
into the supplied tube as it was way to big to go in the dip stick opening

Thankfully no, but it always better to be safe than sorry....
It can be quite quick at filling the sprayer bottle and so as this happens the vacuum needs switched off quickly to avoid pulling any in, I would hate my recommendation and a moment of distraction to result in a divorce
Well the Pela 6000 turned up yesterday and I change the oil easily today, my original pump struggled to get about 3 litres out last time which I
wasn't to happy about but it was better than doing nothing.
The PELA 6000 took out close to 5 litres which is just about everything in the sump so I'm much happier doing an oil change this way now
