Refurbing calipers and drive shafts
Lotusmark2 - 6/3/05 at 07:27 AM

Hi all, I am considering either buying my hubs/calipers etc new or getting old ones and refurbing them myself.
Does anyone have tips on doing the refubing and what sort of result it is possible to get?
Cheers
Mark

Hi Brian,
Thanks for the names.
If possible I would like to do them myself but I would like an idea of what equipment I would need and if there are any "how to" guides kicking around.
Cheers
Mark

What calipers are they?
I took mine down to a local firm complete with uprights discs the lot (fully stripped and bearing surfaces covered) and they shot blasted the lot till they looked like new for £10..They would of just needed paint and seals to be as new....
BUT I left the pistons in to protect the bores and aluminium oxide got down the sides so that when I blew the pistons out with my compressor it riped them to bits results =£110 bill for new exchange calipers But they are spanking

I am looking to get Mini hubs, calipers etc.
So would you say it would be better to strip totally before you get them blasted, then replace the seals and re-construct?
Is that much of a job?

Whats the best way of protecting the bores when sandblasting?

I phoned a local electro plating firm and they said they could zinc plate both calipers for £5. It sounded like he had done it before so i guess he will have a way of protecting the bores when they do it.

Also how much are new seals? And do you have to get them from a main dealer or do halfords do them?
