looking for a small compo that can be carried around in my van, about 2 hp/4-5 cfm will do,i have a SIP jobbie at the mo and it keeps giving trouble.
had a look at machine mart and they all look to be made by the same peeps.
trouble is i use it for drain re-lining,if it goes pearshaped i could end up having to dig the road up so i need one better than the sip rubbish, any ideas???

If it's a transit, could you engineer-on a compressor from a truck? It's always there then, they're dead reliable and nobody will nick it???? I've seen this done on a land-rover discovery rally service car, with a 12v aircon clutch driving it so you could switch it on and off.

I have a small clarke compressor (2 hp jobbie) and it has always been perfectly reliable, but........I know what you're saying, they do run fast and don't inspire confidence!!! I recently replaced mine with a big 3hp 14cfm jobbie.

John,

I use a SIP 2hp compressor and it's ok, the duff ones seem to be the oil free ones with the plastic pistons.

plastic pistons????? what ever next, cheers marcus may go that way as the 1.5 takes for ever to pump up

Peteff - 16/8/05 at 08:34 AM

Chocolate ones? . Cheap ones have aluminium bores with Nicasil coating. Get one with cast iron bores if possible, they last longer

I'm about to buy my first compressor - and noticed how cheap they are on Ebay. I presume most of these are shite, so any recommendations on makes etc that are better quality? I'm only using it for light car building use

had a look at most of the brands and they all seem to look the same, diffo colour tho
get 2 hoursepower or above to avoid plastic piston syndrome

£50 compressor @ Netto next Mon - any good?

Jasper - 26/9/05 at 07:01 PM

No Netto's near me, only Lidl's..... probably just as well

Peteff - 26/9/05 at 07:20 PM

That looks good for £50. I have had a 3hp SIP v twin for about 10 years now but I would seriously look at that if I needed one. Just blowing tyres up and occasional painting would be well in its' scope.

I have a 3hp 14cfm and when I attach little angle grinder it runs out of puff only scores thin sheet before it stops dead. Is this normal?
