ally welding gas advice

anyone have experience of b.o.c alushield ?
does it produce better results than pure argon
for ally tig.

Wadders, In our experience, we have found pure argon (not alushield) to give the best results in TIG welding ally!

I have used alushield to tig 6082T aluminium and can confirm that it is better that normal pure argon. It gives you a hotter more controled weld pool with less amps and better finnish, in my opinion,
So to re-cap better all round
although it is more expensive plus you need a new regulator coz it's a diffrent fitment.
The place i worked at the time made ROV frames and made the job allot easier, only when we ran out of alushield and had to put on pure argon till we got some more did you realise how much better the alushield was.
I tried to convince my current work place to get some in but their not interested
Oh well you can't win them all

Mike, I think you have hit on a very good valid point there.
When we first got the TIG we spent a long time talking to the guys at BOC, about which was best. The concensus was 'what ever suits you', as in, which ever, alushield or argon you yourself prefer. Like you, it is only a matter of personal preference that you can speak of.

there must be a reason BOC hav a gas called alushield or are they trying to pull the wool over the eyes of the uneducated(like me)?

Alushield has helium added to increase the weld temperature and speed. It's mainly for thicker section than you would use straight argon. There is another alushield heavy which also has hydrogen for even thicker material. It looks like a matter of technique as to which you would prefer.

.....................in much the same way that I find Co2 better when mig welding extremely thin steel (i.e. Opel Mantas!) as it takes heat away faster and gives more control, whereas proper Argoshield is vastly superior when fabricating "normal" (greater than 1.5mm) steel.
