For a start, get as big a 'window' as you can afford, and get an adjustable one if possible.

Don't get a cheap battery one off ebay. My mate got one and it's crap, like welding in fog even when the visor is clean.

I read somewhere that the solar powered ones have a lithium battery that lasts about 8 years & is not replacable, I bought one of these http://autodarkhelmet.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=23&products_id=29 the bloke seemed ok, it works ok & you can buy replacement parts from him, I'm no expert though

I got a cheap battery mask £30 ish off Ebay but it does not seem to darken enough now, could be that it eats batteries............

planetester's one looks exactly the same as my Ebay jobby!!!

I have a solar powered one and it packed in after least than 5 years.I cut the unit open and found that it has two 3v rechargeable cells in it, one of them was dead.As i needed to use it then, instead of trying to obtain a replacement I removed the solar cell and built in batteries and soldered leads to the board to allow me to connect to a battery pack made of 4aaa batteries soldered together.
It now works a treat and doesent pack in like it used to do if left in a dark workshop.

ESAB Eye Tech....will last for ever if you look after it

Recently got a Jackson 'Attitude' auto-darkening with battery. It has 3 x settings on the inside which makes it good for every type of welding.
Very light, very good, and eermm a tad expensive

by solar, i always thought they meant that it used the radiant energy from the arc to power it? would certainly make sense...

Both myself and my lad had one left in the garage over winter and the cold weather screwed em both.

Simple, get the best you can afford, there is nothing more annoying than learning to weld and you can't see what you are doing!
I got a new Optrel mask off Ebay for £120 expensive, but brilliant to use.
Cheers J&J

Thats how I thought it worked but its not the case .The solar cell just charges the inbuilt batterys there is a small sensor that detects the arc .
