Anybody here know where I can get a 1500mm od turned? Before I go looking at shipyards and oil country people.
Job needs either a very big vertical faceplate, or a horizontal turning machine.
Cheers,
Syd.
What are you getting made Syd?
We have some biiig machines at work (biggest lathes got about a 6ft chuck, used to have some big vertical borers too. Theres still a grinder with a
12ft faceplate...), but we dont do any outside contract work or one offs though. Sorry
Large scale fabrication and machining shops might be able to help. But I am not sure of any company names that could help out.

Making, not getting made.
Check the 'Building' bit. Left and down a few lines.
Syd.
There was a company called Bootham engineering ,that had a few branches across the country and specialised in industrial repairs, metal spraying and
large machining .I think they were taken over by another group but may be worth a search.

1500mm OD is prob best on a vertical borer, I'm guessing the part is not very deep.
A call round a few places is prob the best answer Syd, you'll probably know anyway but you are after sombeody with a big Webster Bennet machine.
Unfortunately the biggest we have here is 54" swing, but the bigger ones have 150" or so swing.
a quick squizz on applegate turned these up, worth a call maybe?
these have a 2.5m Webster Bennet on their plant list:
ESE Engineering Limited
14 Cowley Road Nuffield Industrial Estate Poole Dorset. BH17 0UJ
Tel: 01202 683441
Fax: 01202 666408
and these do larger vertical work too:
Larchfield Engineering Ltd

Millbrook
Southampton

Hampshire

Thanks Nat.
This is the main breech lock ring and sealing rings, need to be skimmed on the inside faces, and faced and grooved for the seal.
The shipyard that did a couple of these for me previously has closed. They could turn 8' diameter on a horizontal turning centre.
Cheers,
Syd.
How do you sort the blanks Syd? Are they flame/laser cut from plate?
A company i used to work for before becoming a tax dodging student would be able to do this sort of work, no problem.
The biggest machines were a couple of floor borers with 15' tables!! (one of em was made in 1908 but still going strong!!)
Company is called CIC OMEC and based in Sherburn-in-Elmet near Leeds. Tel 01977 682966.
Not sure if they will be cheap but will definately be able to do it.
Hope this helps
forgot to mention they also got a lathe with a 9' chuck and loads of smaller stuff
Theres a place in Peterborough, but their name escapes me at the moment. Dad did tell me, but its gone..! If i remember I will let you know.
Cheers,
David
I'd hazard a guess that it won't be toooo bad to find somewhere, but Syd was prob looking for somewhere local to him ideally, hence my
Southampton area suggestions.
One of the good things in the country, is that despite the government's best efforts, there are still a fair few specialist engineering shops
left!
Seems to be one of my hobbies, sniffing em out round near me! Having someone on your doorstep counts for a lot. You soon regret saving a couple of
quid by using a supplier miles away when you have to drop in to urge things along a little!
Thanks for the contacts fellas.
Somewhere in all that should be someone who should be able to help me.
I've still got a couple of ship repair places west of Hants to check on.
When I get this thing built I should be able to fit whole Locost chassis in!! Anyone for a lightweight superstrong carbon/honeycomb chassis?? Just
give me a blank cheque.
Thanks Again,
Syd.
Building your own auto-clave eh?
How'd it go Syd? Find anywhere that would do the turning for you?
Cheers,
James
I've got a few contacts to follow up, thank you James.
I've built a few autoclaves, sized to suit special applications/work sizes, just like this one will be.
They're only pressure tanks, with a few through skin fittings, some heater elements, and an opening end. More or less.
Syd.
Hi Syd. We'd be up for a lightweight superstrong carbon/honeycomb chassis. Money is no object. Print cheque off and insert amount of cash you
require

Thank you for the kind offer Mr. Hellfire.
But, the LAST thing I really need to get involved in is making and selling bits to you lot!! I have more than enough to do already.
Syd.
The name of that place in peterborough is Peter Brotherhoods...told you I would remember eventually!
