Now here's a question i've wondered a few times.

The big issue is getting a die / former that will fit tube and not pipe.

Why can't you get someone on a lathe to turn you something the right size? That does the inside of the bend then get some thick walled tube the next size up (ie OD size) weld it to some thick walled steel and use that as the outside?

how exactly does it work? seems quite complex... is it a hydraulic jack which is supposed to bend the tube?

tube benders are complicated, it's not an easy job to bend something hollow without crushing it.
