Moving a Milling Machne
12a RX-7 - 4/5/06 at 06:54 PM

sorted ourselves a nice milling machine but I'm having a bit of trial finding someone to fetch it.

The Machine is in County Durham and we are in Lincolnshire, the machine itself is about 1.25tonnes and includes about 250Kg of extra's also to be shifted.

I got quoted £400 from a local firm including shifting it to its final spot in the garage... is this a decent quote (its a lot but its a big job!)

Any other suggestions ... pallet companies are not to be trusted with such a top heavy load !

My mate has a flatbed and a hi-ab ?

He's in Peterborough - I could ask him for you?

About 8 or 10 years ago I paid £100 to have a half-tonne lathe moved about 20 miles - I reckon £400 is probably a fair deal for such a heavy beast. Most mills are an awkward shape too, top heavy.

It's your decision in the end - but it's good when the bloke knows what he's doing, and it's his back, toes, etc. that are risked, not yours!

Have you priced up the hire of a 7.5 tonner with a tail lift for a day ?
I borrowed one from a mate to pick a lathe up from Southampton.

I'd say thats not too bad a quote, I'd have thought more like £350 but still the same ballpark.

7.5 tonner taillift will struggle with that weight, and it'll probably not really fit on it. The big taillifts on 17 tonners will do it but you can't hire one of those so easily!

I'd see what Muzchap's mate with the hiab can do before you go for the £400 jobbie.

thanks for the replies, I think we have it sorted now.
