has any one got a 18x1.5 tap i could borrow/buy/hire seems a shame to by whole set for two holes

It's cheaper to buy two tubes ready threaded from a kit supplier but you'll probably still need a finishing tap to clean them up after welding. Spark plug tap is the same size.

got mine on ebay for about 3 quid. no need to buy any full set.
