Sorry, I know its noddy but I need to cut an M12x1.25 thread onto a track rod. Do I need to machine the rods to 12mm or some other diameter, if so what?

(ps if anyone has an m12x1.25 die I could borrow...)

The rods do need to be 12mm dia. And if your machining, it may be a good idea to put a chamfer on the end to help the die start.
I often use the tailstock to hold the die square, and turn the heastock chuck by hand to get things started.

If you're using a lathe, just cut 'em using the lead. Well, that's if you haven't got a die, and don't want to spend the money.

what track rod is it? mk2 escort is M14 x 2.0

and are you using own bar or using existing track rods? The ones on racks from rally design are hardened so you ain't gonna be able to use a die; but cut on a lathe.

ford track rods have a rolled thread so the bar is thinner than the o.d. of the threaded part - you can't extend thread.

I am asking someone to do this forr me as a favour so wanted to make sure that I ask for the right thing! Wasn't sure if they would be able to cut a fine thread so am preparing a manual back up plan! I am using the arms from the Fiesta rack - cut through them Ok with a hacksaw so I'm presuming that they're not hardened!
