Anyone know about residues with various solvents.
Is Meths a clean solvent? I know cellulose thinners is a clean residue-clean cleaner but not sure about Meths.
IIRC white spirit / turbs leaves residue and therefore, for example, wouldn't be okay to clean brake discs with....
Basically I'm looking to clean my diff bolts and can't be bothered to go and by some cellulose thinners and I've got meths hanging around

Apparently it's got some water in it- but I doubt that's going to be a major problem... After all the diff is open to the elements and those bolts are likely to get pretty cruddy quite quickly...

WD40 or another silicone spay is good for cleaning bolts and bits but not really recommended to clean brake disc.

B rake cleaner , buy it by the 5lts from your local motor factors . Made for the job and leaves no residue. Cleans grease from upholstery , starts engines as well as easistart and great for degreasing

Acetone, Cellulose Thinners are all also clean (and very dangerous - read flammable) solvents.

Hi Ben,

for those bolts you want either carb or brake cleaner or thinners.

Meths is not really very good, clean but doesn't actually dissolve grease that actively in my experience.

Just buy a tin of carb or brake cleaner, spray a load into a small tin like a baccy tin then shake the (new! ) bolts around in it, pick em out one at a time, blow the solvent off and dab your loctite on. Then carefully!!!! smear a tiny dab of grease/oil under the head and fit the bolt.

Race to get all 6 nipped before the loctite goes off, then torque them all up, job done.
