i've got a proper temp-controlled soldering station for that.
Was tining the ends on some wires today, but my soldering iron not up to the job. Its a plug in cheepo more suited for circuit boards.
Are the butane cordless ones any good? and how long do the canisters last?
I use a draper butane soldering iron, it's always seemed fine for what I've used it, car bits, ICE installs etc. The cigarette lighter gas
is what you use for refills, and it lasts plenty long enough. A lot more versatile than a plug in iron too.

I've had a bargain basement cheapy gas iron for ages now, been using it for so long the tip is noticeably eroding away. It's great, gets up
to temp far faster than an electic iron, and you can solder in all sorts of odd positions without getting tangled up or straining against the cable
(the downside is you can drip solder on yourself in all sorts of odd positions ). I'd hesitate to solder anything sensitive with it though,

Iv got a gas one. well iv got 2 one at work and one at home, buthtyev both ended up at home for some reason.
Theyr excellent. u can take them anywhere without worrying about leads etc. I bought a big lighter gas can from a market for a quid about 3 years
ago and its still half full and i use them alot.
Make sure u get a smaller one, some are quite fat and heavy which are a handfull to use. eg mines about the size of a smarties tube only a little
longer..
This is like mine. That ones expensive. Mine was about
15-20 quid from snap on. You can get them all over the place.
I'll second the Weller vote, mine is 15yrs old and still going strong

Weller also do a some nice gas powered irons , i have both electric and gas weller irons, they are well made and last well.For lighter work antex
soldering irons are good value.

Wellers are great irons for home use, but they are mere toys compared to e.g. Metcal, but they are certainly not locost!
