btw

im not considering buying anything like this

i am luck enough to have a HUGE startrite bandsaw in work which is amazing and i have a makita chop saw also

ecosse - 24/1/07 at 08:24 PM

The rage saw is good, but difficult to "aim" properly, also the blades dont last long and are expensive to buy

Cheers

what about the compound mitre one?

cossiebri - 24/1/07 at 08:37 PM

I live in the next road to migtig&arc, get loads of bits from them (they do 1mm cutting (plasma)disc's for the grinder, brilliant)
I saw (no pun intented)a demo of the smaller version of this saw in B&Q's the other week, went straight through a bl**dy household radiator as if it was ply
at the mo.. they are reduced to £29.95(see them yesterday)still an evolution rage but green not orange
Do i need one?

garage19 - 24/1/07 at 09:06 PM

They look interesting. I've been after something like the mitre version for chopping stainless tube.

I wonder how long he blades would actually last?

ed_crouch - 24/1/07 at 09:53 PM

Probably not long in Stainless.

I use a €49,- (30 pound) mitre saw from Aldi for wood that has the blade turning at 5000 rpm. I changed the sawblade with a grindingblade (the largest that would fit) using a customised adapter to mate it to the saw. It has been working great. You can fix it in different angles and cut very precise.

Hope this helps

Something like this for example:

There are probably even cheaper ones to find...

monopoot - 25/1/07 at 09:59 AM

I forgot to mention:
Yes it can cut steel! The largest I have cut with it is a 50x50x5 mm box section...
A locost frametube shoulden't be a problem.

westcost1 - 25/1/07 at 10:43 AM

i use an angle grinder with 1mm blade cuts like butter i got a stand for it from lidle for £9.99 that makes it easy to get the cut spot on

I hope you angle grinder stand was better than mine! It had a frankly incredible amount of slop in the pivot, meaning it was basicly unusable. I shimmed up the pivot with a strip of steel cut out of the side of a drinks can and made it a lot better, but by the time I have a tube accurately clamped up (clamp is crap as well!) I could have accurately hacksawed it. Mine is currently sitting on a pile of scrap bits in my basement, where it has been for the last 2 years or so.

Seen something like that at the shows, and wasnt too impressed with the play in the hinge bit. Other than that (Make new hinge??) it looked OK.

I have a 300mm abrasive cut off saw.
Goes thru anything like a hot knife / butter. Very good

Downside is its a bit messy... grindy bits and sparks all over the garage.

Still prefer to use my 4.5" angry grinder with 1mm slotting discs (thin abrasive discs) quite accurate, not many too many sparks, but discs wear quickly.

I am still thinking of getting the cheap Machine mart (Type) band saw for about £160 ish.
