I am looking at relocaing my steering wheel and one possiblity is to move it closer to me requiring the column to be extened further.
I think this has been done already so would need a cut and some tube or bar welded in between.
Is ther anyone on here, ideal local-ish who has big welder that can wled it up safely? (beer tokens await) I don't trust my puny MIG is up to
the job.
Just guaging interest as will ask around as that wold be more convenient.
your puny mig is well up to the job if you preheat the work first (blow torch or heat gun). The real question is your welding up to it? though you
will find welding preheated work an absolute doddle as the weld pool flows very easly everything seems to slow down.

hi,i live near cambridge and would be happy to do it if you cant find anyone nearer.
what column you got?,im near heathrow and have some tube that fits over the escort column
hey - heathrow is much closer.
it is as far as I know mk2 escort and may have been modified already.
Do you know ID of the tube (probalby need about 100 mm, and the wall thickness?
I have measured it but left info at home but from memory the par with the splines that engage into UJ is 12 ish mm dia. (1/2 in.?) and is on the end
of the column that is about 15 (?) mm (no more than 18 mm).
I need to see how much spare wiring there is to the stalks (that would define the amount I can extend by unless I want to lengthen wires = more work)
and if the ignition lock can get past dash/chassis type of stuff but as the weather is so nice, I am reluctant to start taking bits apart.
Also thinking if there is a way to make the coloum adjustable but cannot think of a way in a safe manner.
If you undo the alloy clamp and the triangular uj and pull it towards you you can crib a couple of inches sometimes. If your column is fitted to the rear of the bracket moving it to the front gives you another inch but you will need to extend the lower column.
