Are these different?

Guess they might be... seems I bought in haste and actually what I bought was a Clarke 160, and despite the guy puttings MIG in the title it is actually an ARC welder.

Can anyone spell out the difference and if an arc welder can be turned to a MIG with a new torch for example?

Guess it can't, but worth an ask.

Is an arc wleder worth having? Only cost be £30, but its in the middle of no where (2 hour drive each way) and if it aint worth having I'll let the guy keep the cash and he can re-sell it.

Totally different mate, can't be converted or owt. If you're going to regularly weld heavier steel (3mm+) it might come in useful.

If the ad stated it was a MIG, tell him you don't want it and it's not as described. You can cancel the auction by mutual consent, he even gets the final value fee refunded.

It is worth keeping if working ok. Can use it on heavy stuff outside .....so no wind issues. You may also be pleasantly surprised at it`s performance with 316 stainless rods on anything thicker than 1.6mm.
A good tool for the all round welder.

How thick is the average box on locost chassis? I only bought it so I can have a go at making a cradle for me blade engine. If I can't use it for that (or it would make it harder than it would be) then I'll leave it.

should be fine to make your cradle, practice loads though on scraps and off cuts till your happy, would recommend 2.5 mm rods , and dont weld for long periods or you will put too much heat into the cradle and risk making holes in the frame .I use both mig and arc, but practice , practice , practice!!!

You will struggle to weld 16g with an arc welder being inexperienced, I would tell him that you don't want it as it was mis-sold and look round for something more suitable.
