I have an 8 mm exhaust manifold stud broken off flush with head casting.
I guess alternatives are drill out and re-tap or try extractor. Do the reverse thread extractor thingys from Halfords work ? I would hate to have a
hardened extractor break off in the hole.
Edit to add -
Hmm just done what I should have done in the first place - searched for topic. Seems extractors are not a good idea. Will probably do the drill and
re-tap solution.
BTW Happy New Year all and thanks for help in 2007.

Get the welder out and lay a nut over the remains of the stud, weld it on and try undoing. the heat and being able to apply leverage may shift it . If the nut shears off you can always weld on another. Works for me.
Yep - nut solution is good.
Weld on the inside of the nut though ;-)
Pat...
Dont use easy outs,
It will break of in the stud meaning you wont be able to drill it out.
As above welding a nut on works well.
IF THE WORST HAPPENS YOU CAN ALWAYS HELICOIL IT.
If you can punch the centre of what's left then drill it with 3mm then 6mm and tap it out.
at worst
it would cost you £25 to have it spark eroded
i had same prob with my cbr 600
after it was spark eroded i was able to reuse old thread just run a tap through it to clean

Thanks guys. The stud has actually sheared below the surface of the face so nut welding (ooer ) is out
Guess it's the long drilling session then
