I went to the Metal Supermarket on the way home from our Lichfield depot today. I got 5m of 25mm angle iron (3mm thick) plus a load of thick pieces of
iron plate.
All for £18!
Now the price might not seem great but they cut the 5metres in 8 lengths I stated in a few minutes, threw in a load of plate for a lot less than they
should have AND that price included VAT.
Not bad for a walk in walk out service I dont think.
Helpful blokes too.
Now I just need to spend a bit of time with my stick welder prior to fabricating this:

but with a pitbike engine in it.
yep they're good lads! i asked them for some aluminium for trying out welding aluminum with the mig welder i bought that day, and they gave me
loads for free!
its wierd though, cosidering how many different sizes, dimentions, and types of metal there are, they always seem to have what you want in stock!
well, i find that anyway
Sounds quite reasonable to me.
My local stockist charges £1 for the first cut & 50p for every extra cut. + vat as well.
Cool Retro cart plans

There is one local to me. Brilliant place. They are always very helpfull and always over cut the sizes i want. They sell small offcuts cheap but you have to ask for them. I have a steel stockist close to me that is very cheap but you have to buy 3 meter lengths which is not always practicle.
There's one just round the corner from where I started a new job today. How well did that work out?
Bloody expensive up here and never have the exact material I am after so only used in extremis!

They dont deliver and my nearest is either southampton or london
Try having a look in the phone book for your local 'steel stockist' you may well be suprised. Mine turned out to to be just around the
corner (hadn't realised it was there before) and it is reasonably priced.
The best bit is if like my ali sheets things wont fit in the car then i can just walk them home

I think I would be tempted to re-design the go-kart chassis using ERW. 3mm angle iron is very heavy stuff and has bugger all torsional strength. It also twists when loaded in bending.
