I've bought some lovely tapered bushes to make my wishbones but the taper isn't "drilled" deep enough. It sits nicely on the mini ball joints i'm using but not far enough on.

I need to open the hole up a bit more but don't have a lathe. Is there a hand tool that will do the job? What's it called.

I've looked at tapered reamers and they seem to be merely for deburring holes in sheet metal or opening them up to non standard sizes. The tapers are at all angles.

What is the tool that I need?

i pretty sure a taper reamer is right. sure someone will confirm though

Yep, taper reamer. But proper ones are'nt in everybodys toolbox these days.

I've measured the taper. Each side is 5°, so that's 10° between the sides. Is this a 10° included angle?

I'd be very surprised if the angle is 10 degrees (exactly)....the vast majority of automotive BJ tapers are either 1 in 8 (1.5"per foot) or 1 in 6 (2" per foot) (both included angles)

1 in 6 is about 9.560 degrees included angle...10 degrees is NOT near enough.

Of course I could be wrong....

On a car is born he drills the tapers out with a tapered drill bit although I've never anything like that for sale.

OK, I've goggles my eyes silly. Where can I find / buy / borrow a 2" per foot or 1 in 6 taper reamer or drill?

I used a reamer from http://www.xkut-reamers.com/servlet/StoreFront for a truck project. Good quality tools.

last tapered reamer i bought was about £80 , might be better to find a local machine shop, as most cnc lathes will alter it in a whizz, or make new ones

I read a lot on these forums regarding taper holes,
One solution to producing tapered holes that I have not seem mentioned
Is the use of a “D” bit. When I was an apprentice, some time before ECU’
and lambdas were invented, we where taught all sorts of things which we
never used once we left the training school one of these was the “D” bit.
I doubt if many will have heard of a “D” bit. I googled it and found nothing.
If you can lay your hands on a lathe and a piece of silver steel you are half
way there. Measure the required taper stick the silver steel in the lathe
and turn the required taper. File or mill half of the taper away to produce
a “D” shape. Harden the silver steel and temper to a light straw colour and you
have a “D” bit. I have to say they do not cut very well for two reasons, the
first being the lack of a clearance angle, second rake angle is 90 degrees but the
resultant hole will be accurate. The bit can obviously only be used to open up
existing holes. If any one has a go at this I strongly suggest practicing on a piece
of scrap first

Hi can you think of anyone local ish that builds kitcars all day. And might have what you need .

I have the taper reamers for doing the cortina/maxi taper but not sure what the mini one is. But i would bet it is the same.

I can sell you ready made tapers if that helps, obviously these are made for the Furore so accept Toyota parts in 2 cases & Transit in the 3rd. I have these made specifically to fit the tapers by a machine shop. IIRC they are approx 5, 7 & 10 degrees, I sell them at £12 each inc P & P, but I'm willing to send you one to try & if it's no good just post it back. HTH

sorry this is too late smart - but axminster tools flog a servicable taper reamer for £3.45. I got one (as a shot to nothing) and it has done sterling service (2 uprights and some bearing seats)

Your after Morse taper reamer sizes , they are in the Zeus book which you can purchase from any good Eng stores .seen them on the Internet also. this book is the bible for drills reamers thread patterns even some simple geometry and all equivalent sizes Handy to have about a fiver i think . as i bought mine some years ago now as an apprentice .

I agree the Zeus book is handy, but they are NOT looking for morse taper sizes...automotive BJ tapers are different....95% are either 1 in 6 or 1 in 8
