Hoist
GeorgeM - 2/2/08 at 11:18 PM

Got one of the ALDI 'special' hoists thursday.
I'm looking for help in mounting it.
I've got a 9 or 10' span between two brick
pillars in the garage.
Will 2 pieces of 4x2 timber bolted together be
strong enough. Will be using it to lift my R1 engine.

i would say yes, with the obvious caveat that you have to secure it all properly and attach the hoist in a way that wont weaken the timber.

I base my guess on the fact that you could do a chin up on one of them without it breaking, so two should be ok.

yep easy with some to spare
just be careful the timber doesn,t have to big a knots in it there is a mark on timber to say it ,s knots are less than a third of width or some such dimension check this figure out 6x2 on the narrow plane is really strong we have lifted allsorts on this
take the weight slowly and see how you go

Engine weight is 63kg I think, you are probably between 80-105 kg at a guess
If it takes your weight then it will be ok

thanx for replies,

i'll give it a go. ten years ago i might have tried
to lift it, but did a disc, so i'm a bit more careful
now.

hmm I've also been tempted at ALDI's electric hoist, very cheap and can lift two car engines

Get some 100x3mm flat steel and bolt it to the sides along with the wood and it should be strong enough for anything on the car.

A flitch beam.

That's a neat idea actually.
