Hey all, i have somefow managed to aquire a crack in my van windscreen, its on the passenger side and it developed from a tiny chip which can only be
seen from the outside as its on the black border bit. now i hear you saying "claim on the insurance" i wish i could but im TPT&F!!!
and autoglass want 320 to replace it which is bit steep atm as im out of work. was made redundant and finished last week so has anyone drilled a
cracked screen before, i have heard everyone say "just drill the end of the crack bish bosh" etc but does it work as a short term fix? its
all ready spread about an inch since i noticed the crack. and its only going to get worse. so can anyone help me pretty please?
Rob
the heat from drilling will crack it more. Lot's of water and I would think a very small diamond grinding bit turning at low revs might stand a
chance.
99% convinced it will crack
Change your insurance to fully comp?
Scrappers/EBay for the windscreen and get a local chap to fit?
Sorry to hear about your job - best of luck getting another!
This happened to me a few years ago.
I found a local scrap yard who would supply and fit for about 40 quid, by getting them to do it it's their fault if they break it when
they're putting it in.
Not sure what van you've got? Hopefully something quite common giving you a good chance of finding a scrap one.
My mate's new Transit screen was drilled and has carried on cracking from after the hole. It's a heated element in the screen as well.
I would have thought the hole would have to be very smooth to contain a crack in glass, I have seen this method used in other materials.
Yeah bummer about the job but you get one soon, loads around.
Should be repairable by the epoxy method -- many windscreen companies can do it.
I've regularly drilled screens in the past, small high speed 12v drill with diamond tipped bit. The hole should then be repaired with the resin used for chip repair. Never had one crack any further after this method. Don't know if Autoglass or any other screen repairers still do this method but worth asking. HTH
thanks for the advice and sympathy guys. cant change tp fully comp they wont let me unless start a new policy which will make me loose my 3rd year
ncb, as for the job i knew i was going to finish for a year, just having a few weeks off to get most of this car done, the van is an 03 combo so
plenty around
thanks
Rob
