Previously when I had a parts washer about 6 years ago I used to use paraffin which I found to be very effective and not too smelly.

Maybe that's not too ecological now, and maybe not even the most economic, so I am open to suggestions for alternative fluids, maybe even water based ones.

And its still petrolium bassed.......But does the job

erm ,,,,not really

The water based stuff is crap and goes mouldy and like jelly after a while. I use heating oil, it's a bit like unrefined parafin, about 60p litre, but wear gloves when using it.
Bung it in with the waste oil at the council dump when it's time to change it.

Or just wait until Nov 5th when you need to get a bonfire going good and strong

We bought some machine mart stuff which was water based but not so good as paraffin sort purely because garage is under house and wife complained of the smell.

paraffin/kerosene is best, followed by diesel/heating oil.

Proper fluid is best, but I've never managed to find anywhere that does the fluid without renting the washer with it! I guess because you can't "officially" dispose of the spent fluid.

I use paraffin.
