Hydraulic fluid
Dickyboy - 20/8/08 at 08:04 PM

I left my ancient but working engine hoist with the release valve open, and enough fluid has escaped to stop it working, can I top up with brake fluid? if not anyone know what I need and where to get it?

I wouldn't use brake fluid it's not the same as hydraulic oil. you can get hydraulic oil from agricultural machinery suppliers and possibly from motor factors for jacks etc.

Cheers

Definitely dont put brake fluid in it.I use power steering fluid in my trolley jack and it seems to be ok.

You can always use fork oil from a motorcycle shop.

as above, you can use ATF if you have it (same as power steering fluid

Any decent accessory shop should sell hydraulic oil

Go to car spares place and ask for jack oil. They should have it in litre tins, the hoists don't hold a lot.
