recommendation for TIG welder?
02GF74 - 21/10/08 at 12:29 PM

Can anyone recommend a TIG welder, ideally one that you are using?

needs to be 240 V single phase.

Plan is to weld steel DOM tube, 3 mm wall thickness together and same tube but to 6 mm steel plate.

budgie wise, dunno, £ 500.

If there is something that'll do AC TIG of aluminium then could push out to be £ 1 k.

Prices ^^^ include torch.

For the above requirments, what sort of spec. would I be looking at?

Will mostly be welding 1.5 inch tube as opposed to metre long runs of plate.

What a the "good" brands and what are the ones to avoid?

I think that's for a M.I.G. audience not a T.I.G. audience. The Tiggers have deeper pockets than Miggers. Never the twain.

Hi.

It would be my advice to buy a recognized make.
If that means that your budget will only stretch to a second hand one, then so be it.

That's what I did. Tig welders pay for themselves many times over, given time.

I would suggest u look at the fronius range, a search should find em and your local supplier, I have an ac/dc Tig of theirs and its the bees knees, an ex hire or demonstrator would be in your budget I reckon.

There's plenty of tig talk on there too.

I have a commercial unit, similar to a miller unit. Most yank stuff can be strapped for single phase but you need a fat wire to the company fuse, mine will draw over 100amps @ 240 at full power so I never stray there!

If getting a second hand one try and ensure you get a foot pedal and water cooled torch if you are looking at doing Ali.

Something like this would be ideal.
