I have a judder through the steering wheel on my Impreza under heavy(ish) braking, which I understand is usually caused by warped discs. I know a bit about the decent brands for motorbikes, but wondering what replacements would be recommended for cars? Also, am I right in thinking the pads ought to be changed at the same time?

Is the car heavily modded? If not go for oe replacement discs from a good known company. Brembo, ap, etc.

defo do pads at same time, again, for road use a good name like mintex etc is a good place to start.

Yup warps are induced by Heavy stops Then holding one's foot firmly on the brake pedal,, as for example at a traffic light.
The pads being pressed tight to the overheated disc causes differential cooling and therefore warpage.

Holding the car on the foot brake when the brakes are stinking hot is the main cause of disc problems the other thing is don't park the car up when the brakes are stinking hot.

First thing to do is give the discs a a serious clean up with 80 grade production paper --- you want the surface texture quite rough but u pitted.
Also clean the pads.

If that fails new discs and pads you don't need to fit anything fancy but make 100% sure the mating surfaces on the hub and disc are a 100% clean.

mintex OE spec pads are some of the best I've found without splashing out on upgrade pads

I tried several combinations with the Imprezas I had in the past.

Only fast road and no track use.

Genuine Brembo discs were always good and the best pads Ferodo DS2500.

The worst, by some way, were EBC Redstuff - although this was some years ago and the product could have improved somewhat since then.

you never tried the green or black ones then - the black 'HD' ones were worse than the ferodo budget ones that were 1/3 the price

It may well be heat warping but, 90% of "warped discs" problems we come across in the workshop are actually caused by rust between the disc and hub flange.

Pagid RS29 pads are decent, unsure if you'll get them in your fitment, I'd stick with standard genuine discs.
