Finally got my zetec turbo mapped WOW!
six mad - 25/3/13 at 03:21 PM

Well after a lot of debate i decided to take my MK to Bailey Peformance to get it mapped properly.

I could not have picked a worse day for weather and travelling (last Friday) anyway i thought i would cover the car to protect
it. The cover soon shredded its self after about 2 miles in the wind

Anyway the traffic/weather was not too bad on the way there set off at 7am got to Broseley near Telford around 11am.

Dale soon got to work on the MS1 ecu upgrading firmware and soldering in some of his own tweeks to improve the ecu.

Soon the car was back together and back on the rolling road. After a brand new map the car started up first turn.
Dale then spent the next few hours mapping the car.

First snag was the turbo we thought it may end the day prematurely as it was losing some oil into the exhuast housing causing the car to smoke, it seemed to clear as the day went on and the mapping was completed.

Dale advised that a better breather system may cure the turbo but if not its no biggy I will run it for a while
and monitor it fingers crossed.

So mapping complete car back on the trailer around 5pm by this time it had been snowing for some time.
The journey back was scary to say the least snow was heavy and in a RWD bmw i was flapping a bit but the trailers
extra weight kept me going Finally got home at 9.45pm.

So after a good clean on Saturday i have been out today for the first time and WOW its fantastic the torque is awesome nearly 300ft lb and the power is up to 230bhp i wasnt going mad and its spinning in 3rd gear

So all in all I would recommend Dale and woul lik to thank im for a crazy car

Last thing does anyone want to guess how long my cutch and gearbox will last?

Good numbers....try not to break your gearbox.

Thanks!

Glad you are happy with the work we did for you, give me a shout if you need any help / advise regarding the breathers.
Go for 10/40 or 15/50 semi synthetic oil but always warm the engine before you thrash it.

If you swapped your T3 for a stock big turbo escort cosworth T34 you would see close on 300BHP but i would limit it to 270BHP as you are running a stock bottom end. Would smooth the torque curve as well.

As for the T9 box i would say you will get away with it as most of the time the wheels will be spinning! If your are concerned keep your eye out for a cosworth T5, you wont break that - we have put 600lb/ft thru a stock T5!

Cheers Dale www.baileyperformance.co.uk

If it is a stock box you'll strip 3rd gear first....and with 300ft lb it will not take long.

I have been running 300bhp through my type 9 for three years not broke it yet, this is with 8 track days and 7 visits to santapod. I am working on the assumption that it breaks traction before the gears.

Thats reassuring to hear, any tips on box maintenance- oil type, regular changes?

not using slicks or anything mega wide on the back may help.

And I broke 3rd gear on the 4th run with similar torque, mine was a BGH E6 so much stronger than stock Type 9. Note it is torque that kills gearboxes not power and third gear is the likely candidate because of the case hardening Ford used on third. You have the classic turbo early torque peak so any fast gear changes from 4th to 3rd or 2nd to 3rd will possible kill the 3rd gear.

At the end of the day it isn't what I say or anyone else about the box that matters....only time will tell.

Thanks Jeff

I do have a spare box although i,m not sure of condition, can they be rebuilt to stand
more torque? Or is it better to source a T5 box as Dale has said?

Thanks John

T5 for peace of mind
