BSP threads

I have a bsp thread on my oil cooler. Do I just tighten it up, or do I need to add PTFE tape?

Cheers

Mike

You will need a dowty seal between the fitting and the cooler.

If it's BSP parallel, then yes a Dowty washer (or similar) is needed, but if it's BSP taper, then you need PTFE tape or pipe sealant.

Just an aside, but about twelve years ago I was doing a project for ICI in Billingham and their specs were way out of date, they required BSP(P) fittings to be fitted with a greased leather washer!

Depends on what type of fittings you have - if the cooler has male convex fittings (as mine does , which I think is pretty much the standard) then you dont need anything - not PTFE tape and certainly not a doughty washer , as the correct hose fitting is a metal to metal seal .

Any I have seen are convex fittings -- certainly was standard practice for Serk alloy coolers and British volume manufacturers when they fitted oil coolers on car like the MGB and Imp Sport.

Thanks guys.

I emailed Think Auto who supplied the cooler and the hoses. They said a little grease on the threads and male end.

So that's what I did.

Mike
