Hub Socket Size
Hi There
Can some one tell me the size of socket needed to remove the hubs from a Scorpio / Sierra? I think it is 41mm but I want to be sure before I buy
it.
Anyone got any tips on how to remove them?

rear hubs on a sierra are 41mm yes
And i just got a deep impact socket and a breaker bar, make sure you take them off when the car still has its drivetrain, and its on its wheels,
otherwise its damn near impossible!

Oh yeh, and remember one side is a left hand thread, i think its the passenger side but the nut itself will have notches cut into it on the sides of
the hex, identifying the fact its a lh thread

I used a blowtorch on the nuts to melt the nylon since like all lock nuts, you shouldn't use them again.

Could not get the nut off, wedge the hub with angle iron used 41mm socket, breaker bar and scaffold tube, just bent the angle iron and dragged the car
forward, even with heat on the nut.
Ended up grinding the nut face flat.
Bloody awful job

I managed to do this after taking the sub-frame off the car by making a 'tool' out of some angle iron which bolted to the hub.

A commercial vehicle workshop will likely have an inch drive air wrench which will take the nuts off in seconds. Worth a drink for the fitter?

Now there is a thought, there is a Volvo truck garage just around the corner from me. Might be worth a talk to the foreman and a bottle of something,
looks like it would save me a whole load of time and trouble.

If the wheel studs are in and the hubs are off the car the easiest way is to put the hub upright in a vice with 2 of the studs against the jaws.
Get a large cold chisel and a lump hammer and shock the nut undone. Usually takes about 5 blows to get them to move. Once they have moved they will
undo easily.
Just done a pair at the weekend.
