stainless steel discolouration
Hi all,
I remember reading recently about how to put the shine back in stainless after its been on the car a while.
Is it possible to use a similar technique to remove the blue/brown discolouration caused by welding an exhaust manifold together? I'd prefer it
to be one shade rather than 2 tone!

I expect it's possible to polish it out. Certainly Frost sell some magic stuff to get bluing out of stainless steel exhausts....

I did a Google search on chemicals for removing marks made on heat-affected stainless steel - it's readily available, but it sounded so nasty
that I decided to get the emery cloth / scotchpads out!
Most of the gels seem to have hydrofluoric acid in them... I chickened out...

Hi
Surely the manifold will just discolour again the first time you run the engine with 'gusto'

Cheers ben, i will try that stuff out.
Mick - the discolouration is not from the exhaust gases but by the MUCH higher temps used to weld it together. I want to polish it out and then if it
blues slightly on running it it'll still look better than it does now
