Rivnuts!
I am looking to purchase a rivnut tool and there is a wide range of prices and I guess therefore quality.
Some are evidently of industrial quality but I was wondering whether the cheaper pop-rivet style guns are limited to the installation of ali
rivnuts?
And if so, was wondering what sort of limits they might have in terms of application. i.e. through grp / ali for lightly loaded items etc. and how
about into chassis tubes for slightly more heavily loaded applications?
All thoughts appreciated.
Cheers Chaps

Certainly with the cheapo one I bought the thread on the tool is very cheap metal (I ripped it a bit with an ali rivnut!!!)... I doubt they'd do
anything stronger than ali IMHO. May be it was just mine (uber cheap).

Been happy with my 12 quid silverline tool for M4 and M6 rivenuts (used steel and Ali in M6).. Bigger in steel might be a problem. Seems to set them
well.

i can confirm that the cheapy pop rivet type work fine on steel up to 6mm, and more than man enough for the Ali ones.

Take a look on David Jenkins' web site, has the plans for a very nice rivnut insertion tool that will pull steel rivnuts.
Do a search on the web and there are plenty of homebrew tools to do the job.

Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level, then beat you with experience.

Just be careful when working in areas like the inside of the tunnel, got the rivnut in and clamped but insufficient room to remove the tool, had to
cut the threaded portion of the tool of to get it out.

Good point well made.
MEMFast are local to me so they will be a good source.

RS do a fairly decent one for 17 quid plus vat, I used mine for a couple of jobs on my car, it will do m4 to m8 rivnuts.
"Thread insert riveting tool"
Rs code: 487-151
BTW I would suggest you stay away from ali rivnuts, the thread seems to rip out far too easily.

I second that, I have the £12 siverline tool that pulls countersunk steel rivnuts easily, it also has an adjustable stop to prevent ripping the
threads out of ally ones, although I use steel rivnuts 90% of the time
