MIG welder swan neck wire liner

the wire liner in the swan neck of my MIG welder has broken. I've put it back together without and it works but do I need the 10cm or so of wire liner in the swan neck or is it OK to leave without?

Mine broke a few years ago, and it wouldnt feed the wire very well, kept snagging. I found a chap on ebay (weldequip) who was selling whole nozzles, he sold me just the liner for £3 posted, was 4 years ago so no idea if they are still about though.

when you do a lot of welding and the wire gets hot it melts the gun without it.
