VAG Passat B6 won't start???

Not sure if this is the right place to post, but here goes...

Over the weekend I serviced my B6 Passat 2.0 TDI. Part of which was replacing the diesel filter. Easy job, but now the bugger won't start! I suspect air in the diesel, but other than filling the filter can with clean diesel (which I'll try tonight) I'm a bit stuck. I've changed the filter before and never had any issues afterwards with starting it.

Anyone got any suggestions or bright ideas....?

I saw something about this in a recent issue of car mechanics, they do need to be primed after installation. You may have just got lucky the first time round.

I think it's just a case of turning the key to on and not starting it, leave for 30 seconds and repeat 3 or 4 times for things to fill up?

When I changed the diesel filter on my Mondeo I had to hand pump some diesel through in order to fill the filter and pipe. Once this was done it started fine.

There is a bike valve connection on the Mondeo under the bonnet where you can connect a pump. I used one of the little rubber ball type pumps that come with a one way valve, and used an old bike pump connector to screw onto the car's fuel circuit.

I always fill the filters up with diesel then prime by switching ign on and off for about 10 second intervals

From what I've read that can work, but maybe if you don't get quite enough diesel in there it will fail.

I find it much less messy to put it in dry then prime manually, but I guess that depends on the specific car.

Thanks for the feedback gents, much appreciated!

I will fill it tonight and get a mechanic mate to purge the air from the system.

Fingers crossed for a snarly TDI fire up

I doesn't seem right, but just keep cranking it over and it will eventually start. I done this the other day to my fathers, and going on advice from my friend whos runs a successful garage I followed the above and after a minute or two it was fine, don't worry about purging it etc it will self prime after a while

Filled the filter can with diesel and still no go! Mate is going to bring home VCDS system tonight and see if he can see anything going on.

Filled the filter can right to the top and cranked it over and over - got it running with pops, bangs and smoke! After a minute it ran OK and now starts/stops fine, thank god.

Lesson - next time remember to fill the filter can with diesel

Might also add that I'm selling the car after suffering a head injury and being told I can't drive for 12 months by the oh so smart DVLA!
