Arc welder

2 seconds after posting that I can not weld and wouldn't like to try, my brother calls me and says he's just bought an arc welder and he's been welding for a bit now.

Anyone tell me if we can wels the locost chassis with an arc welder and if not why?

It's a 110 B.T.W.

from what I have seen so far, it's a problem with the joint being messy but I would clean them up with a grinder anyway so that's not an issue.

Is there any other problem? Strength of weld etc OK?

At the end of the day the difference in the strength of a weld from MIG or MMA (arc/stick welding) is nothing.

MMA produces a bit messier weld, covered in slag which you need to chip off with a hammer. Messy and takes ages. If you arent bothered about that then theres no problem with arc welding.

I am an experienced arc welder, but I had difficulty in welding the chassis to the standards needed, mainly because of the problems of using the small gauge rods needed for the job (1.6/2 mm). This may have been because of the cheap welder I was using, AC 50v. You really need a DC 80v machine for this job.

I ended up buying a cheap TIG, which I am very pleased with, it also does DC 80v Arc. The only down side is the high cost of the gas.

Good luck.

Sorry, I cannot agree, the arc weld is about the neatest you can get, if you are doing it right, the slag will curl up and fall off about 1 1/2" behind the weld pool. I do agree with RPS, the higher the OCV, the better, the old Lincoln oil cooled welders were great to weld thin metals

If you can keep you head, whilst all others around you are losing theirs, you are not fully aware of the situation

I aint gonna argue since i know you are a good welder from whats been said before. My welds with MMA are worse than with MIG. Maybe thats just me then

All sounds good guys thanks. I MAY have a chassis at a rediculously low price now so the welding would only be for changes!!
