Gas cylinders - BOC

Do BOC cylinders have a bar code on them near the top??

I have found a few BOC bottles at in a deserted unit. the company went down and just ran several months ago.

I also have a mate with a BOC account.

My question is:

If i gave him the bottle and paid for it to be filled. Could i get away with it.
Would they assume it was one of his bottles and re-fill it. Or are all bottles identified by a bar code?

It might save me the bottle rent if they are not.

a friend of mine 'acquired' some boc bottles with a portapack he bought at auction. think he took any stickers off and took them in and got them changed on his normal account.

AFAIK all of the bottles have unique numbers as they have to be pressure tested etc.

If you have an account with the type of gas cylinder required on the stock list yes.

You should leave all labels on. There is no bar code currently on them, and they are there for safety. People need to know what is or was in them. Although they are never completely empty until purged.

Whenever i change my argon bottle, they never check the old bottle, just bung it in a place with all the other empty argon bottles. So i reckon you'll be ok.

Yes as long as it's like for like. If you change it at an agent as long as you know an account holder they are not so keen as main depots. BOC are now owned by Linde.

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

Nobody has actually mentioned what these bottles contain/did contain.

I certainly agree that if they were for oxygen, propane, or acetylene then you'd have great chance at the scrappies.......

But if they are argon/argon mix, then I don't see why scrappies would have any.....

Just a thought.

A BOC bloke told me that they get to know when people are doing this when the bottles are upgraded or altered for some reason such as going from 200 to 230 bar a few years ago. They know that the account holder is on the new bottle type but brings in the old one that you had. But he then said it's largely ignored anyway! I suppose they know they are getting custom that they otherwise woudnt.

A scrapyard near me has a compound full of Air Products Argon/co2 bottles and will swap them for similar without any questions. He sticks £20 on the refill price and makes his money that way. Bottles are now filled to 300bar at Energas where I get mine from.
