Small Portable Welder

Hi

Need some advice.

Looking for a small welding kit that can live in the trailer for trackside repairs (Arn't mudwing mounts a pain..) I am wondering if you can get such a thing as an Oxy set that works off small (disposable?) bottles or a very small Mig, any ideas anybody?

Just got a card through the door from machine mart - VAT off all clarke kit. Don't know if Clarke do anything suitable for your needs, but worth a look.

You could look at the latest inverter migs. They are small and powerful and some will run from generator power. They are not cheap though.

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

ok then, some welding sticks and jump leads - then connect across car battery - the off-roading boys used this method for in the field repairs. Or is that still too big

B&Q used to do at little tiny gas set with disposable cylinders about the size of a milk bottle. I think the make was Bernzomatic. These are great for little diddy emergency jobs.
I would think that the heat output wasn't too great and the gas per litre is expensive.
As mentioned a BOC Portapak with the smallest bottles, on a little trolley or a frame with carrying handle is probably favourite.

We bought the same welder at the weekend, cracking machine.

I "think" that each Machine Mart branch has it's own VAT free days[1], when we went for the welder on Sunday, they didn't have the one we wanted (they did eventually, it was in the window) and said we couldn't go to another branch 'cos their VAT ree days differ...

[1] They seem to be invite only, we had to either show our postcard or sign in.

Thanks All.

That Miniportapak looks just the job, though must go and find out about the Arc Welding with a Car Battery, that sounds really interesting..

You'll not weld arch supports with the mini portapack, it will not generate enough heat for thick metal.

I've not done much with it yet, but it runs fine from a normal household socket so far. My brother has chopped and welded a sump up, so it's had a workout, but not at full power.

According the bods in the know HERE the welder is fine unless run at full power for a while on a 13 amp socket.

Check the forums on the welding site, we bought the welder as it's recommended by professionals on there.

It's soo much better than our old Snap-On 130, does welds to be proud of

I got an invite last week

It's vat free day this Sunday and next at our local Machine Mart in Mansfield, not much help for you in Glasgow though.

i only get invites to the bradford branch, but i got a clark 160te welder last weekend, collecting today! You need to be on their list as they do the vat free sessions during normal closing times, ie sundays and evenings.

I've had one for about 2 years now. Runs fine from a 13A plug unless you're welding something really thick on full power. Then it just blows the fuse.

It's fine for 99.9% of jobs, though....
