Electrolysis results
For those of you that have tried it you will already know.
But anyone who has only considered it ,give it a go.
I am delighted with the results and so simple.
1. Put the rusty part in the tank.
2. Connect up.
3. switch on charger.
4. Go to work.
5. Come home.
6. Rinse off.
7. A quick whizz with the wire brush.
8. Ready to paint.
FANTASTIC!!!!
I am now addicted to it.
Pictures in my archive. What do you think?

It certainly works like magic doesn't it
An alternative method is to simply soak in malt vinegar - similar results too.

Yes.
Used about 1/2 a bag in about 20lts of water. 52p per bag fro Tesco.
And a piece of bent stainless sheet.
I think it was a bit too much as it was drawing too much current from the charger. so I set the charger to low. About 3-4 amps.
Well pleased myself. I have put just about everything in before I have painted it.

Will try the vinegar some time. But the electrolysis doesn't stink does it?

You shouldn't use stainless electrodes it gives off very nasty chemicals...

what, into the solution or the atmosphere? Whats the nasty?
Did the job anyway. I'm sure the instructions says Stainless or iron in the instructions. I will check it out with one of our chemist Gurus at
work tomorrow.

Yep. If you use Stainless in this solution it releases Hexavalent Chromium, which can very well result in cancer.
If you need more information, google is your friend.
It is, of course, highly illegal to dump these chemicals down the drain.
Best to use a cast iron electrode, and accept the fact that its going to rust event faster than an Austin Maestro at a seaside resort...
Ed.
P.S. I guess a carbon 'lectrode might work?
I-iii-iii-iii-ts ME!
Hurrah.

Just another tip....
If you add the washing soda (at about 2tbsp to 5 litres) to HOT water, the soda solution does a damn good impression of a degreaser too...

Down side with the vinegar is that acid will have a go at all of the surface including the good metal - the chemical ion exchange method of the
electrolysis does not.

AFAIK acetic acid does not attack steel - only the oxide.
