TIG Brazing

I am playing around with some copper pipe and steel plate to make a manifold for an experiment with bike carbs. I was thinking about brazing these together using my TIG inverter. Anyone done TIG brazing and can give a few tips or hints?

Use TIG Brazing Rods??

I saw some so I got them, as they have to be useful.
However, not had anything to try them on.
Well... Yet!

Hi,

I think TIG brazing of Copper to Mild steel plate (5mm plate ?) Will be a difficult task to achieve. I cant see you maintaining the right heat in both parts.

I assume this is for a water cooling pipe pick up.

You could Tig weld a small length of Mild or stainless steel tube to the plate instead of a copper tube.

Presonally I allways use Silver solder for this type of job.
But I do have the luxury of a gas flame

Probably not an immediate issue but copper and steel do react over time.

At work i've seen copper pipes that have been rested on angle iron hangers and eventually it corrodes through the copper.

I would do it in steel if I could find about 500mm of 40mm thin wall steel tube!

If I can't TIG braze I suppose I could solder them together

I beg to differ.

There's guy on the island who I've witnessed using brazing rods with a tig.

I needed some thing brazed(Stainless into brass), he couldn't be bothered with the fuss of getting the gas set out and set up, so just got the tig torch and got on with it. To the complete amazement of the entire workshop staff!

His explanation,...the tig is only an electric flame! And so it is.

If you ever need one of the best welders this country has ever produced, then I'll gladly introduce you when the time comes. He also spends half his time in the USA working for Boeing, doing special project work, and almost exclusively works in exotic metals and titanium, so knows his stuff. And is a real gentleman with it.,

Cheers,
Syd.
