Yes, I've been advised that strong alkali burns are worse than (most) acid burns.
I remember from school that fat/oils+caustic soda makes soap. Turning your skin oils into soap whilst they are still in your body isn't advised

I thought that if you used vinegar, you just leave the item to soak for a few days/week. No electrics involved.
Electrolysis is quicker, but more messing about.
Tell them about the bent treacle edges!
