Hydraulic fluid
I left my ancient but working engine hoist with the release valve open, and enough fluid has escaped to stop it working, can I top up with brake
fluid? if not anyone know what I need and where to get it?

I wouldn't use brake fluid it's not the same as hydraulic oil. you can get hydraulic oil from agricultural machinery suppliers and
possibly from motor factors for jacks etc.
Cheers

don't write OT on a new thread title, you're creating the topic, everything you write is very much ON topic!

Go to car spares place and ask for jack oil. They should have it in litre tins, the hoists don't hold a lot.

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.
