grades of steel for fabrication
Hi guys,
hope your all well.
I'm looking to stock up on some steel, for fabricating some simple brackets for my alternator and idler pulley, and thought i'd stock up a
bit for future jobs as well. Looked online and there seems to be a vast number of grades of steel and different names, not sure what to ask for other
than mild steel. Will heat/expansion make any difference?.
Oh and if anyone knows of good local source in Worcestershire/west mids, the sort of place that might have an odds and sods bin would be great.

The commonly and cheaply available "structural" mild steel is S275 JR or J0. Available in all the structural shapes and in flats/strips.
For general small bracketry I wouldn't worry about thermal movements.

Don't get too complicated just use 'mild steel'.

I get mine from "Underwoods" in Hereford, there main depot is in Worcester 01905 459400 They are in Wainwright Rd.
They are fair on price as they reduce the price when the cost of steel drops nice to see a company passing on cost savings to customers. They will
sell a single length or bulk orders and are very helpfull.
