Cleaning of aluminium items.
Tried the electrolytic cleaning of steel;
brilliant!!!.
Any thoughts on something similar for
ali?

Sure this has been covered before ? and I believe it was British Trident that suggested boiled rhubarb leaves are very good for cleaning aluminium.
Haven't tried it myself yet ,forgot to keep the leaves off last years crop. Think Machine Mart sell aluminium cleaner possibly a mild acid?

Cillit Bang degreaser, dont leave it on too long though as the acid eats the ali.
Spray on liberally, leave for a minute, work with a stiff brush then rinse off with soapy water. Works a treat. Did my carbs like that.

With virtually no effort.
Make sure you wipe the items over with an oily rag afterwards otherwise they will corrode very quickly.

hmmm, cleans it well but is it acid?
Don't know, but acids have limited effect on ally unless they are very powerful, apart from oxalic acid that is.
Alkalis have a much greater effect on it!!
If you want to clean it really fast, get a caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) solution simmering on the stove, and put the bits in. They will be clean in
seconds!! They will be dissolved in minutes!!!
Usual safety stuff applies.
I rarely do safety but even I ALWAYS wear safety specs or goggles......hot caustic solution will blind you almost instantly.

Oxalic acid is available in powder form at Boots dispensary. They order it for next day at 5 quid a tub. Good for cleaning fibreglass boat stains
too.

He's not wrong. I used to etch ally samples as part of work, and could melt 6082 T6 ally bars in a few hours if I set the tank hot enough! As
said, a mild solution and beware of going too hot, as when the ally's put in it can fizz up. Also, don't smoke near it,, as you may blow
up!

I did too when I couldn't find the rather crusty thermostat housing I was merrily boiling....................
found one bit in the end!!!
