I need a new auto welding helmet and have a decent budget, recommendations wanted
I have come to the conclusion that I cant weld if I cant see.
My cheap ebay helmet is fantasic sometimes, other times it is awful. I cant quite pin down what it is doing but sometimes you could wish for no more,
others it is useless. It has to go.
I have what I think is a decent budget (up to £150) and quite fancied this one.
They are local to me and have some very well priced helmets.

I gave them a call and they told me that one was crap, and I needed this one.

I need MIG and TIG capability and good performance through 25 to 150 amps. Am I asking too much?
I would post this on the Mig Welding Forum but I have a feeling I would get 'all the gear - no idea' responses once I tell them I am using
a Rehmann. They do get a bit excited if you haven't spent at least a grand on a TIG unit.
EDIT - sorry I forgot the question - does anyone have any recommendations, I dont mind spending a bit more than I want if it is worth it.
Thanks
David

That yellow one looks more like a diving helmet.
You don't need to go crazy and buy a real expensive one, unless your doing welding for a living. One that is fume proof I'd say is worth
it, though I got round that with some silicon sealant. Check the price of spares as the plastic screens get marked rather quickly, Tig seems to be
kinder on the screen. So long as I can darken it sufficiently and it's comfy I'd be happy.
What ever you do, don’t say you don’t care about the price.

Auto screen
Have a look in your local phone book and see if BOC have a trade centre near you.
You'll get some sound advice & actually get to see the product.
Speedglas make some of the best screens on the market. Shame about the prices though.

I'd second BOC - not the cheapest, but great customer service. Last time I visited my local branch they had 3 or 4 helmets on offer at all
sorts of prices. They often have cut-price offers too.
Generally they will be 'professional grade'.

BOC have a place about 20 miles from me, I will give them a call.
It is a rare event for me, but I dont want to spend too little, I bought a Clarke 105EN to weld a car up but for another £60 I could have had a 151TE,
that was a mistake I dont want to make again.

well I went to BOC to get gas for my welder and my local one was just stuffed with welding gear, far more than anyone else I'd seen.

Engweld is the Energas depot, there's one in Sutton and Derby so both are reasonable access for me. Speedglass helmets get mixed reviews from
professional welders but from a practical point of view you are only a few miles from Sutton and can take it back if you don't like it.
I've used a cheap helmet at a mate's house and I went back to my helmet with a shade 9 glass. His was like working in a fog (yes the
protective film was removed ) If you want to spend a bit more look for an Optrel satellite or similar

yours, Pete
I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.
